What Shopify charges on every sale
Shopify itself doesn't take a percentage of the sale when you use Shopify Payments. What you pay is the card processing: on the Basic plan in the US that's 2.9% plus $0.30 per online order, and that's what is loaded above. If you take payment through a third party gateway like PayPal instead, Shopify adds a 2% transaction fee on Basic on top of whatever that gateway charges, so put 2 in the transaction fee box. Rates differ by plan and by country. If yours don't match, edit the boxes.
The fee this calculator leaves out
Your plan. Basic runs about $39 a month, less if you pay for the year. It isn't in the per sale math because it doesn't change with volume, but it's real money. At 20 shirts a month it's about $2 a shirt, which would take the default example from $6.33 down to a bit over $4. At 200 a month it's twenty cents and you can stop thinking about it.
A worked example, with a hoodie this time
Say you list a hoodie at $44.99 with free shipping. Printful wants $22.50 for the blank and $7.99 to ship it, so $30.49 is gone before anyone takes a fee. Shopify Payments takes $1.60 and you keep $12.90, which works out to 28.7%. If you wanted 30%, $45.89 gets you there. Type those numbers in above if you don't believe me. The same hoodie sold on Etsy pays $4.72 in fees and leaves $9.78, so Shopify is worth about three dollars more per hoodie, as long as you can get people to the store yourself.
Etsy sellers
The Etsy profit calculator has Etsy's fees preloaded and a note on Offsite Ads. The print on demand profit calculator covers Etsy, Shopify, or your own custom fees.
